Sometimes six-month checkups can make patients a little nervous. However, this is typically because they don’t know much about the appointment and they have a little bit of dental anxiety. If you’re one of these people, there is no need to feel nervous about your appointment. Our dentist, Dr. Scott Healey, and dental team will take good care of you and your smile. To help you feel better in the dental chair, we are happy to give you details about your appointment by answering commonly asked questions about six-month checkups.

Why do I need a dental cleaning and exam?

Unfortunately, there are many things in the world that threaten and attack your smile, like plaque and tartar. If you don’t professionally clean your smile every six months, those substances can harm your teeth and gums more than you might realize. In fact, they can quickly promote tooth decay and gum disease. If you think your oral hygiene routine can clean your smile for you, that is half true, but not 100 percent true. Your dental cleanings are one of the only treatments that can completely remove tartar from your smile. Also, dental exams can help your dentist detect and treat dental issues at the early stages, which can help you avoid major complications and pain.

What happens during the appointment?

First, our dental team will take a series of dental X-rays. This will help us know the health of your teeth, gums, and underlying bone. Then, we will deeply clean your smile by removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, thoroughly flossing your teeth, polishing your enamel, and strengthening your teeth. Next, your dentist will carefully inspect your smile with his naked eye and also examine the dental X-rays.  If a problem is detected, he will recommend the proper treatment.

Will treatment hurt?

Your dental checkups will not be painful. You might feel a little bit of pressure and sensitivity, depending on the health of your teeth and gums, but you should not experience any major discomfort.
